          Building Projects

703 Reeves Street, Whitesboro  - New Home Build

Homeowner Partner - To be announced week of January 22, 2012
Start Date: Tuesday January 24, 2012
Work Schedule: Tuesdays, plus the addition of Thursdays, and every other Saturday.  Our new start time will be 8am, and work days will run until 4pm.  We will be publishing a volunteer sign-up calendar soon with specific tasks and volunteer needs for each workday going out several weeks, so volunteers can sign up in advance.
Work Crews:  Each work day will have a construction supervisor, plus 1-4 crew leaders who are experienced in the construction tasks scheduled for the day.  There are also spots on each crew for unskilled/willing to learn volunteers.
About the Project: The next Habitat home in Cape May County will be built on a lot donated by Middle Township at 703 Reeves Street, near the corner of Fishborn, in Whitesboro. The partially wooded lot has been cleared, and we are in the process of hiring licensed contractors for the construction of the foundation and septic system.  The house plans were completed by board of trustees member and construction committee chair Christina Amey, of Amey Architect in Ocean City. We are excited to begin the process of "stick-building" our first home in Cape May County since 2005.

          Completion Date: 12/15/11
          About the Project:
The house we are rehabilitating at 201 Wildwood Ave. is a early Habitat home that has fallen into disrepair over the course of nearly 20 years.  In addition, the homeowner has become disabled, creating significant accessibility issues. We are working with the family to rehabilitate the house, which is on the same street in Whitesboro where we will be building new Habitat homes in the future. The family will repay the cost of the repairs through their mortgage with HFH Cape May, as well as contribute 150 hours of sweat equity to the project. We have taken on this project as part of our committment to the neighborhood, to do what ever we can to ensure that Habitat homes going forward are positive assets in local Cape May County communities.  This project is also serving as a "warm-up" for our construction team, as we are readying the lot and acquiring the building permit for our new construction project on Reeves Street (see above).

Why Habitat is Building in Whitesboro, Middle Twp

It's true--not only did Habitat for Humanity Cape May County build our last home in Whitesboro, Middle Township, our new building project will be on Reeves Street in Whitesboro as well.  Why?  Quite simply, because Middle Township has donated the property for both of these homes to Habitat for Humanity, as part of their commitment to support the creation of affordable housing in the community.  Because of the generous donation of these lots, Habitat is able to sell the houses to our homeowner partners at below market rate, which when combined with Habitat's zero interest mortgage, makes the monthly payments affordable for low-income families.

In 2012, we plan to begin construction on another property donated by Middle Township in Whitesboro--which can accommodate up to four homes.  As our fundraising activities accelerate, we hope to be able to finance the building of multiple homes on this lot during 2012, to begin to better meet the need for affordable housing in Cape May County.
