Past Building Projects

307 Sumner Street, Whitesboro

Homeowner Partner - English Family
Project Sponsor - Thrivent Financial for Lutherans
Dedication Date: December 14, 2013
About the Project:
Our second building project for 2013 was on Sumner Street in Whitesboro, the first home to be built on a lot donated to Habitat by Middle Township, with the support and efforts of the Middle Township Affordable Housing Advisory Committee.  This four-bedroom home was be stick-built from the ground up, and is Habitat Cape May's very first Thrivent Builds project.  The sponsorship from Thrivent Financial, a national financial services company with 2.5 million members, provided 50% of the cost of construction. Local Lutheran Congregations will provided an additional 10% of construction costs, as well as many volunteers for the project. Our homeowner partners for Sumner Street also have Whitesboro roots, as mom Amelia English grew up in the community as well.  Over 170 local volunteers participated on this build, which was completed in December 2013.

101 E Anna Street, Whitesboro

Homeowner Partner - The Wakefield Family
Project Sponsor - New Jersey Association of Realtors Housing Opportunity Foundation
Dedication Date: July 31, 2013
About the Project:
Habitat Cape May received an amazing donation in fall 2012 - a 4-bedroom ranch-style home in immaculate condition, from the Collins family of Ocean City. The Collins were building a new home, and offered the house to Habitat to relocate to a lot in Middle Township. The house was moved from Spruce Rd in Ocean City to Anna St in Whitesboro at the end of April, and Habitat volunteers completed interior and exterior renovation to make it good as new.  We were thrilled to have this project sponsored by the New Jersey Association of Realtors Housing Opportunity Foundation, and realtors from throughout Cape May County, as well as from the NJAR offices in Northern Jersey, joined our volunteer construction crew. Our partner family's mom Sharay Wakefield grew up in Whitesboro, and now has her own home in her old hometown.

Homeowner Partner: Luisa Lopez
Completion Date: 12/15/11
About the Project:
The house we are rehabilitated at 201 Wildwood Ave. is a early Habitat home that had fallen into disrepair over the course of nearly 20 years.  In addition, the homeowner has become disabled, creating significant accessibility issues. We are working with the family to rehabilitate the house, which is on the same street in Whitesboro where we will be building new Habitat homes in the future. The family will repay the cost of the repairs through their mortgage with HFH Cape May, as well as contribute 150 hours of sweat equity to the project. We have taken on this project as part of our committment to the neighborhood, to do what ever we can to ensure that Habitat homes going forward are positive assets in local Cape May County communities.  This project is also serving as a "warm-up" for our construction team, as we are readying the lot and acquiring the building permit for our new construction project on Reeves Street (see above).
